Getting Started
RideMeter is a simple, privacy-focused bicycle ride tracker. No account needed — just open the app and start riding.
When you first launch RideMeter, the app will ask for location permission. This is required for GPS tracking. After granting permission, you're ready to go.
You can switch between English and Vietnamese at any time using the language toggle button in the top-right corner of the screen.
Activity Types
RideMeter supports three GPS activities. Pick the one that matches what you're about to do — the type is saved with the session and, if Strava sync is on, uploaded to Strava with the matching activity type.
- Cycling (Ride) — the default. Uses the bicycle icon.
- Running (Run) — uses the running figure icon.
- Walking (Walk) — uses the walking figure icon.
Switching activity type
Before starting a session, long-press (touch and hold) the green Start button. A menu appears with all three activity types — tap the one you want. The Start button icon updates to match your choice. The small upward chevron on the right of the Start button is a reminder that the menu is there.
Tip
Activity type is locked in when you tap Start. To change it you'll need to stop and start a new session — there's no in-ride switcher, since speed/distance behaviour and (eventually) Health/Strava semantics differ per type.
How to Track a Ride
Tip
Wait a few seconds after starting for the GPS signal to stabilize. This ensures accurate speed and distance readings from the very beginning of your ride.
Keep Screen On
Use the Keep screen on toggle at the top-left of the ride screen to prevent your phone from auto-locking during a ride. This is helpful when your phone is mounted on the handlebar and you want to keep glancing at live stats. Turn it off to save battery when you don't need the screen visible.
Understanding the Display
During an active ride, the main screen displays the following metrics:
- Speed — Your current speed in kilometers per hour, updated in real time via GPS.
- Pace — Minutes and seconds to cover one kilometer (min/km). For Walking, pace is the headline metric instead of speed, since it's the more natural way to gauge effort on foot.
- Distance — Total distance covered since the ride started.
- Active Time — Time spent actively moving (excludes paused time).
- Total Time — Total elapsed time from start to now, including pauses.
- Max Speed — The highest speed reached during the ride so far.
- Elevation Gain — Total altitude climbed during the ride.
- Elevation Loss — Total altitude descended during the ride.
- Steps — Step count for the session, read from your device's motion sensor. Shown for Walking and Running.
- SPM — Steps per minute, i.e. your cadence. Shown for Walking and Running.
When you track a Walk, RideMeter shows pace (minutes per kilometer) as the headline number instead of speed, and the activity summary reports your average pace. Cycling and running keep speed (km/h) as the headline.
For Walking and Running, the Steps and SPM (cadence) cards take the place of Elevation Gain and Loss, which are shown for cycling. Both appear live during the activity and again on the summary afterwards.
A live map below the stats shows your current position and the route you've taken.
A small compass widget in the top-right corner of the map indicates your current heading direction (N, S, E, W).
Splits
RideMeter automatically breaks every activity into splits — one segment for each kilometer (or mile) you complete. Splits show you how steady your effort was and which sections were fastest or slowest. They work for cycling, running, and walking, and they're completely free.
What each split shows
- Pace (running & walking) or speed (cycling) for that segment — the headline number, just like on the main screen.
- Moving time for the segment, with paused time excluded.
- Elevation gain and loss within the segment.
- A color-coded bar comparing each split against the rest — greener is faster, redder is slower — so you can spot your strongest and weakest sections at a glance.
Where to find splits
- Live, during the activity — a compact bar at the top of the ride screen shows your most recent completed split (e.g. Km 1 · 26.8 km/h). It appears once you finish your first kilometer; tap to expand it.
- On the ride summary — a Splits card appears after you stop. Tap it to open the full breakdown.
- The full Splits screen — a bar chart of every split, a sortable table, your fastest and slowest split highlighted, and the overall average. On Apple Watch, splits appear on the workout summary too.
Kilometers or miles
Splits follow your distance unit. RideMeter uses kilometers by default; switch to miles in Settings and every split — on screen and in the voice announcements — updates to per-mile segments.
Audio Coach
As you complete each split, the Audio Coach reads it out loud using your device's built-in text-to-speech — for example, "Kilometer 1, pace 5 minutes 30 seconds per kilometer" for a run, or "Kilometer 1, speed 26.8 kilometers per hour" for a ride. It works fully offline, briefly lowers your music instead of stopping it, and also posts a notification so you get the update even with the phone locked or in a pocket.
The Audio Coach is on by default. In Settings you can turn it off entirely, or enable it per activity type (cycling, running, walking) so it only speaks up when you want it to.
Tip
An activity needs to reach at least 1 km (or 1 mile) before the first split appears. If your activity ends mid-segment, RideMeter still saves that final partial split so nothing is lost.
Auto-Pause Feature
RideMeter automatically detects when you stop moving and pauses the ride timer. This is useful at traffic lights, intersections, or any time you take a short break.
- Auto-pause activates after 5 seconds of no movement.
- Auto-resume activates after 2 seconds of movement detected.
When paused, the Active Time stops counting while Total Time continues. This gives you an accurate picture of your actual riding time versus total trip time.
You can also manually pause and resume a ride at any time using the PAUSE button. Tap STOP to end the ride and save the summary.
Tip
Auto-pause helps you see your true average speed and active riding time, even on routes with many stops.
Ride History & Statistics
All your completed rides are saved automatically and organized by month. For each month, you can see:
- Total distance covered across all rides
- Number of rides completed
- Average speed for the month
Tap on any ride to view its detailed summary, including a map of the route you took.
Deleting Rides
To delete a ride from your history, swipe left on the ride entry and tap delete. This action is permanent — deleted rides cannot be recovered.
Streak
A streak counts the consecutive days you stay active. Keep moving every day to build it up — the longer your streak, the more milestones you unlock. Everything is tracked on your device, with no account needed.
What counts as a day
A day is added to your streak when you complete a qualifying activity that day. Any activity type counts — cycling, running, or walking. An activity qualifies when it meets either of these:
- 30 minutes or more of recorded time, for any activity type, or
- enough distance — at least 10 km cycling, 5 km running, or 2 km walking.
You only need one qualifying session per day; extra sessions don't add more. A session counts toward the day it ends on, so a late-night activity that crosses midnight counts for the new day.
Streak Freezes
Missing a day normally resets your streak to zero. A streak freeze protects you: if you miss a single day, a freeze is spent automatically to keep the streak alive. You earn freezes as your streak grows, up to a small reserve. Missing more days than you have freezes ends the streak.
Milestones
Reaching certain lengths unlocks a milestone badge with a short celebration: 7, 14, 30, 60, 100, 180, 365, and 730 days. Unlocked badges are collected on the streak detail screen.
Where to find it
Your streak appears at the top of the History tab. Tap it to open the streak detail screen, where you'll find your current and longest streaks, freezes available, a calendar of active days, and your milestone badges.
Streak settings
From Settings (the gear icon on the History tab) you can turn streak reminders on or off, and reset your streak if you'd like to start over. A reset is permanent.
Tip
Streaks are built from your own activity history and live entirely on your device, so they keep working completely offline — no account or internet required.
Live Activities Setup
RideMeter supports Live Activities, allowing you to see your ride stats directly on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island without opening the app.
During an active ride, the Live Activity displays:
- Current speed
- Distance traveled
- Ride duration
Enabling Live Activities
Live Activities should work automatically when you start a ride. If they don't appear, check the following:
- Open Settings → RideMeter on your device.
- Make sure Live Activities is toggled on.
- Ensure your device software is up to date.
Strava Sync
RideMeter can upload your completed rides to Strava so they appear alongside rides you record with other apps or devices. Strava sync is optional — nothing is uploaded unless you connect a Strava account.
Connecting your Strava account
- Open RideMeter and tap the History tab.
- Tap the gear icon (⚙) in the top-right corner to open Settings.
- Under the Strava section, tap Connect with Strava.
- Sign in to Strava in the secure web view that appears and tap Authorize.
- You'll be returned to RideMeter and the status will change to Connected.
Auto-sync
Once you connect Strava, Auto-sync rides is turned on by default. Every ride you finish after that point is uploaded to Strava automatically as soon as your phone has an internet connection. You can toggle Auto-sync off at any time in Settings → Strava.
Syncing a single ride
If Auto-sync is off, or you want to upload an older ride from before you connected Strava, open the ride from History and tap Sync to Strava on the ride summary. The button shows the current sync state (uploading, synced, or retry on failure).
Disconnecting Strava
To stop uploading rides, open Settings → Strava and tap Disconnect Strava. This removes the stored Strava authorization from your device. Rides that were already uploaded remain on Strava — to remove those, delete them from your Strava account.
Tip
Rides upload as a GPX track (route, time, and elevation). RideMeter never sees or stores your Strava password — login happens directly with Strava in a secure web view.
Location Permissions
RideMeter needs access to your location to track rides via GPS. The app works best with the following settings:
How to configure
- Open Settings on your device.
- Scroll down and tap RideMeter.
- Tap Location.
- Select "Always" or "While Using the App".
- Make sure Precise Location is turned on.
Why "Always" is recommended: If you want ride tracking to continue when the app is in the background (e.g., screen locked while riding), selecting "Always" ensures uninterrupted GPS data. Choosing "While Using" may cause gaps in your route when the screen turns off.
Privacy note
RideMeter only uses your location during active ride tracking. Location data is stored locally on your device and is never uploaded or shared.

Troubleshooting
GPS Issues
If you're experiencing inaccurate speed or distance readings:
- Wait for GPS warm-up — After starting a ride, GPS accuracy improves after a few seconds. Avoid starting to move immediately.
- Check location permissions — Make sure RideMeter has access to your location with Precise Location enabled (Settings → RideMeter → Location).
- Open sky visibility — GPS works best outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Tall buildings, tunnels, and dense tree cover can reduce accuracy.
- Restart the app — If GPS seems stuck, close and reopen RideMeter, then start a new ride.
- Restart your device — In rare cases, restarting your device can resolve persistent GPS issues.
Battery Tips
GPS tracking uses battery power. Here are tips to extend battery life during rides:
- Lower screen brightness — Reduce brightness or let auto-brightness handle it.
- Lock the screen — RideMeter continues tracking in the background. Lock your screen to save battery while riding.
- Use Low Power Mode cautiously — Low Power Mode may reduce GPS update frequency. For best accuracy, keep it off during rides.
- Close other apps — Minimize background activity from other apps to save battery.
Live Activities Not Showing
- Ensure Live Activities is enabled in Settings → RideMeter.
- Make sure your device software is up to date.
- Check that Live Activities is enabled globally in Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Allow Access When Locked → Live Activities.
- Try restarting the app and starting a new ride.
